Facebook allegedly paid contractors to transcribe people’s chats in some of their apps without their knowledge, the news comes in a report from Bloomberg.
According to the report, Facebook paid contracts to transcribe audio messages, the contractors were not told where the audio was recorded or how it had been obtained, they were only told to transcribe it.
Facebook has confirmed that they were doing this and have now said it has been stopped, a statement from them, which you can see below was given to Bloomberg.
“Much like Apple and Google, we paused human review of audio more than a week ago,” said a Facebook spokesperson.
This was done with people in their Messenger app who had chosen to have the voice messages transcribed, although they were not told that people would be listening to the messages.
The reason that this was done was that contractors were checking that Facebook’s AI was transcribing these messages correctly.
